Vega shares its name with a star of the northern sky that early navigators steered by - known to Arabic astronomers as 'al-nasr al-waqi', the swooping eagle. An oval carnelian cabochon hangs from a wine-red cord in 18k Gold Vermeil; carnelian was a favoured stone for signet rings in antiquity, prized because warm sealing wax would not cling to it, and worn across Egypt as a stone of bold action.
