August Birthstone Guide

Radiate feelings of inner warmth, wellbeing and positivity with August's birthstone

The history of Peridot

The name Peridot derives from the Arabic word “faridat,” which means “gem. Considered one of the world's oldest gemstones Peridot is believed to have been first discovered before 1500 BC by the ancient Egyptians who mined the gem on an island in the Red Sea called Topazios, now known as St. John’s Island or Zabargad. Since their discovery Peridot has always been associated with the light, and was known as "the gem of the sun" by the ancient Egyptians. Today, Peridot is still considered the gemstone of Egypt and is believed to ring in good health, restful sleep, and peace to relationships. It’s also noted to balance the emotions and mind.

Where is Peridot from?

The Peridot deposits originally discovered by the ancient Egyptians on St John's Island have since been depleted. Today, the largest sources of Peridot are the United States, Myanmar, Pakistan, and the Himalayas.

The properties of Peridot

Peridot has been used in jewellery by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans who revered this gemstone as a symbol of the Sun. Peridot radiates feelings of inner warmth, wellbeing and positivity. Peridot is associated with the Solar Plexus Chakra, connected to willpower and manifestation; and the heart chakra for love and emotions.
